What is Heartworm Disease

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially deadly disease that can be contracted from a single bite of a mosquito. It is caused by foot long worms, (heartworms) that can live in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels of pets. This has the ability to cause heart failure, lung disease and damage to other organs in the body.

Some signs of heartworm disease include fatigue, lethargy, decrease in appetite, persistent cough and weight loss. In severe cases where heart failure has been developed, the appearance of a swollen belly may occur due to excess fluid in the abdomen.

Ways to prevent heartworm disease is by having your pet on a heartworm preventative. This should be done year round and life long to ensure the safety of your pet.

Ask one of our doctors about getting started on a heartworm preventative. This may include having a heartworm test done prior as a safety measure.
